Fly Fishing The Au Sable River

Headed up to camp at Burton’s Landing State Forest Campground to kick off small stream trout season here in Michigan. Camped at Burton’s Landing Friday night (April 23). It’s a great little campground, with ample room to explore along the Au Sable River as well as space to camp. It is a $15 fee to camp overnight, and self registration. Camp features a water pump as well as two vault toilets. Each campsite has a fire ring and picnic table.

Fly Fishing The Au Sable River 4-24-2021

Used a mix of nymphs and Hendricksons today, but mostly focused on drifting nymphs as there weren’t any rises at least in the stretches of river and time frame that I was fishing.

Burton’s Landing

Started at Burton’s Landing and fished from 7:15 am to 9:15 am. The weather was mostly sunny, but quite cold. Started at 28 degrees in the morning and had to clean off ice off of the eyelets of my fishing rod. One small hit, probably from a creek chub or similar. Didn’t see any rises.

Smith Bridge

Checked out the South Branch of the Au Sable River at Smith Bridge east of Grayling. Fished this located from 9:15 am to 10:15 am. The river is pretty shallow in this section, but offers ample parking and access. There’s also a vault bathroom here. No rises or fish caught during my time here.

Stephan Bridge Landing

Fished this access point on the Au Sable River from 10:15 am to 12:15 pm. Weather was sunny, but still cool. This is a great access point, but quite popular, both with float trips as well as waders-all who are excited about fly fishing on the Au Sable River. The wading access is pretty easy here, but with the water being as low as it was, finding holes was difficult. Didn’t catch anything in this stretch. Lost one fly. There are two vault toilets here.

Louie Landing

Finished the day at Louie Landing. Fished from 1:00 pm to 2:14 pm. Weather was overcast and had some rain sprinkles. Definitely liked the stretched of river just down river from the landing, but had no success. Did lose one fly in a tree over hanging the river. No toilets here. This is the smallest access point that I checked out today-it’s surrounded by private property and only has a few parking spots.
